More details on the kids who died after water tank collapse

A tragic and sad incident happened at number 1495 in Unit A Seke recently. Two families suffered a horrible ordeal when their children died after a neighbour’s water tank stand collapsed on them. A third child escaped death by a whisker and was later hospitalised after suffering some injuries. The stand collapsed after failing to hold the weight of a 5000 litre tank.

It has been reported that Trinity Saungweme aged nine and Colleen Kamonere aged 18 months both died as a result of the collapse. Trinity’s seven year old brother Thulani suffered a fractured leg. He was fortunate enough to survive after the force of the water threw him some places away from where he was playing. He was briefly hospitalized but has since been discharged. It has been confirmed that the distraught neighbor assisted with funeral expenses and hospital bills.

The incident has left people calling for those that make water stands to use better materials. People have also been asked to buy stands from reputable and verified sources. Taipa Ganda, the neighbour whose tank caused the tragedy said he had only installed the tank last month.

The heartbreaking tragedy is indeed one that will linger on in the minds of many for some time. Current water shortages have forced people to buy large tanks to store water. Chitungwiza has been battling water shortages for decades.

The community has been rocked by the unfortunate incident and people are now even more alert on places where their kids play. Some have called on council to find a lasting solution to the water crisis
