Zimbabwe Could Be Entering a New Era with Growing Chess Excellence

Zimbabwe’s chess scene showed promising signs of growth after Warren Park Academy made history by winning the first-ever 2025 Meemnart Chess Tournament. The event took place recently at Roosevelt Girls High School and featured 52 talented competitors from various schools across the country.
Warren Park Academy claimed the championship by outmaneuvering the competition in a fiercely contested tournament. Roosevelt Girls High School finished in second place, while Mufakose High School from Triangle took third place. The winners received cash prizes of US$1,000, US$750, and US$500, respectively. All participating schools were awarded chess boards to recognise their effort and commitment.
Bernard Chirozva, the tournament organiser, praised the skill and sportsmanship shown by all players. “I extend my deepest gratitude to all the schools and players who made this event a success,” Chirozva said. “The talent and tenacity on display were remarkable, proof that chess in Zimbabwe has a thriving future.”
The tournament’s success highlights the increasing interest in chess as an intellectual sport among Zimbabwe’s youth. The competition provided a platform for young minds to develop critical thinking, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills. These abilities are key to academic and personal growth.
Looking ahead, the organisers plan to expand the tournament’s reach. Chirozva stated, “Our vision is to involve even more schools nationwide, ensuring every young mind gets the chance to compete and excel.” This ambition signals an effort to promote chess at the grassroots level and nurture future champions.
The rise of events like the Meemnart Chess Tournament signals that Zimbabwe could be entering a new era for chess. Increased participation and support can propel the country onto the regional and international stage. As more schools engage with chess, Zimbabwe’s youth will have greater opportunities to sharpen their minds and showcase their talents.
This growing chess culture not only benefits players but also strengthens communities by fostering discipline, patience, and mutual respect. With continued investment and enthusiasm, Zimbabwe’s chess future looks bright.
