Cattle Farmers Encouraged to Raise Boran Breed for Hardiness and Disease Resistance

Cattle farmers across the country are being urged to consider Boran cattle, a breed known for its hardiness and resistance to common livestock diseases. Alfonsi Chayumbaka, a 66-year-old breeder from Hwedza, shared insights while exhibiting Boran bulls at the recent Harare farmers’ show.

At the event, Chayumbaka showcased the Bravo Boran BTR1960 bull, weighing 960 kg, which he hopes will win the show’s top trophy. He noted that a larger bull from the same breed has previously secured the award. The breeder emphasized that Boran cattle are easy to manage and have strong natural immunity, reducing losses due to disease.

Chayumbaka, who manages the livestock farm alongside owner Richard Matewa, explained that maintaining Boran cattle requires only regular vaccinations and prescribed medications. “The Boran cattle breed is not difficult to maintain. In summer, they graze on pasture grass. In spring, we provide supplementary feed for nurseries and other needs,” he said.

The bull presented at the show was born in 2019. Chayumbaka added that the farm operates dedicated areas solely for cattle rearing, ensuring proper feeding and care. Regular nutrition and pasture management remain key to keeping the herd healthy.

Over the years, the Hwedza farm has consistently brought Boran cattle to the Harare farmers’ show, earning multiple prizes for their quality and presentation. Chayumbaka’s advice to fellow farmers highlights the breed’s potential to improve livestock productivity while reducing vulnerability to diseases.

By adopting Boran cattle, farmers can benefit from a hardy, low-maintenance breed that performs well in local conditions, offering both economic and agricultural advantages.
