National Employment Councils Lead Efforts to Shape Zimbabwe’s Labour Future

The National Employment Councils (NECs) are stepping up as central actors in shaping Zimbabwe’s labour landscape, emphasizing the promotion of decent work and sustainable social protection.
At a recent NEC Symposium, Nomore Nhema, Chairperson of the National Employment Councils Coordinating Committee, highlighted a vision that aligns with the government’s economic agenda. He described NECs as “key actors in promoting decent work and sustainable social protection for all,” signalling a mandate that extends beyond traditional collective bargaining to broader responsibilities for employee welfare and economic stability.
Nhema reaffirmed NECs’ commitment to supporting government development goals. “NECs will continue to support Government’s transformative agenda in the world of work,” he said, underlining the councils’ role in fostering a stable environment for both businesses and workers amid economic shifts.
Recognising a rapidly evolving labour market, NECs are embracing technology and new work models. Nhema stressed that the councils are focused on “adapting to new forms of work, anticipating labour market shifts, and playing a critical role in shaping policies that will define the future of work in the country.”
This proactive approach positions NECs at the forefront of national discussions on automation, the gig economy, and emerging labour trends, ensuring they remain influential in crafting policies that balance worker protection with economic growth.
By combining traditional labour advocacy with forward-looking strategies, NECs aim to create a resilient and inclusive workforce capable of meeting Zimbabwe’s current and future economic challenges.
