ZimTrade Urges Exporters to Meet Global Standards as Zimbabwe’s Exports Surge by 55%

Zimbabwe’s national trade development and promotion agency, ZimTrade, has called on exporters to adhere strictly to evolving global trade requirements to sustain and boost the country’s export growth. This comes amid a remarkable 55 percent increase in Zimbabwe’s exports, rising from US$76.7 million in 2023 to US$119.2 million in 2024.

Delivering welcoming remarks at the ZimTrade Export Awareness Seminar held in Bulawayo on Wednesday, ZimTrade Director of Operations, Mr. Similo Nkala, emphasized that success in international markets hinges on exporters’ willingness to meet rigorous standards and certification demands imposed by global buyers.

“Exporters must be ready to meet strict standards, follow proper procedures, and invest in the certifications that global buyers expect. This is where ZimTrade, working closely with partners like the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), industry associations, and other institutions, plays a key role in guiding and supporting you through what can often feel like a complex process,” Nkala said.

He further highlighted that sustainability, traceability, and responsible production have become essential prerequisites in global trade, particularly in markets such as Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. “Buyers are increasingly focused on how products are made, who makes them, and whether ethical and environmental standards are being met.”

With Zimbabwe expanding into new markets like Singapore while maintaining access to the European Union, Nkala underscored the urgent need for exporters to align their practices with these international expectations to capitalize on emerging opportunities.

Encouragingly, he noted that many Zimbabwean businesses have already embraced certifications such as Global GAP, HACCP, and Halal, which are opening new doors for their products abroad. “ZimTrade is committed to supporting more of these success stories through technical assistance, training, and buyer linkages,” Nkala said.

The export awareness seminar forms part of ZimTrade’s broader efforts to equip exporters with the knowledge, networks, and resources required to compete effectively on the global stage.

Nkala stressed that every province, city, and business cluster in Zimbabwe holds untapped potential to serve regional and international markets — provided businesses prepare adequately, remain compliant, and maintain competitiveness.

Attending the seminar were a range of businesses from Zimbabwe’s Southern region, representing sectors including fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), manufacturing, agriculture, clothing, retail trade, engineering, mining, and tourism.

ZimTrade continues to play a pivotal role in bridging Zimbabwean enterprises with global markets, offering vital support and resources to help the country’s exporters scale new heights and contribute significantly to national economic growth.
