EU Commits €4.3 Million to Support Zimbabwe’s National Public Health Institute

The European Union has pledged €4.3 million (over US$5 million) to aid the establishment of the National Public Health Institute in Zimbabwe. The announcement was made during a meeting at Kaguvi Building in Harare, attended by Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora, World Health Organisation delegates, and EU representatives.

Minister Mombeshora said the funding will strengthen Zimbabwe’s health systems. “This funding is a major boost towards our goal of setting up a fully functional National Public Health Institute, which will enhance disease surveillance, preparedness, and response. We are grateful for the continued partnership with the EU and WHO in advancing public health in Zimbabwe,” he stated.

EU representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting sustainable health infrastructure in the country. “The EU remains a strong partner in improving public health in Zimbabwe, and the National Public Health Institute will serve as a cornerstone in protecting the health of citizens,” an EU delegate said.

In addition, Dr. Raiva Simbi has been appointed coordinator for the Ministry of Health and Child Care. The role is expected to improve efficiency and coordination across the ministry’s programmes, further supporting the development of Zimbabwe’s public health infrastructure.

The funding and institutional developments mark a significant step in advancing Zimbabwe’s capacity to manage disease outbreaks and strengthen overall public health systems.
