Alpha Media Holdings Senior Reporter Blessed Mhlanga Detained in Harare

Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) senior reporter Blessed Mhlanga has been detained after voluntarily surrendering himself at Harare Central Police Station this morning. Mhlanga, who also serves as the head of HSTv—AMH’s online broadcasting division—is facing charges of publishing material allegedly intended to incite public violence.
AMH is a leading independent media house in Zimbabwe, publishing prominent newspapers such as The Standard, NewsDay, Zimbabwe Independent, and Southern Eye.
Mhlanga reported to the police in the company of his lawyer, Chris Mhike, after being summoned last week. His arrest has raised concerns about press freedom in the country, as he is known for his investigative journalism and coverage of political and social issues.
According to sources, Mhlanga is expected to appear in court on Tuesday to face the charges. The details surrounding the specific content that led to his arrest remain unclear, but media watchdogs and rights groups are closely monitoring the case.
His detention comes amid increasing pressure on journalists in Zimbabwe, with authorities often cracking down on independent media. The arrest has sparked conversations on press freedom, as critics argue that such actions create a chilling effect on journalism and the public’s right to access information.
More details are expected to emerge when Mhlanga appears in court.
