Chin’ono promises to write about his prison experience
Journalist Hopwell Chin’ono finally lapped the sweet taste of freedom after being granted bail by the High court recently. He had languished in prison for 45 days following his arrest on charges of inciting public violence. Hopewell was given stringent bail conditions and should he default, his bail will be revoked.
High court judge Tawanda Chitapi ordered granted the journalist 100 000 rtgs bail on condition that he reports twice a week at Highlands police station. He was further ordered to reside at his given address and to surrender title deeds for one of his properties. He was also ordered to stop using his Twitter account @daddyhope or create any other account for the purpose of inciting public violence until his matter is finalised.
Speaking after his release Hopwell remained defiant. He said he will continue to raise awareness on the situation in the country including the pathetic state of prisons in the country. He said he will be writing newspaper articles as well make use of Facebook for the cause.
Most people hailed his lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa for showing strength even after having stones thrown in her path for representing him.
Hopewell will live to tell the tale of how he was remanded time and again in prison. On his last day at court, he really looked frustrated and sick. He even claimed that he had been brought to court against his doctor’s orders after being suspected of having covid 19.
Hopewell was later photographed in the comfort of his home with his family after his release.
