Exciting Zumba Sessions at the Oliver Mtukudzi Half Marathon in Honour of Tuku’s Legacy
Renowned choreographer John Cole and fitness guru Zororai “Zorro” Nhira are set to take centre stage at the Oliver Mtukudzi Half Marathon, where they will lead participants through dynamic and invigorating Zumba sessions. This exciting new addition to the annual marathon will take place on February 2 at the Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton, offering athletes and attendees an unforgettable experience.
In response to overwhelming demand, the dynamic duo’s inclusion in the event’s lineup is sure to add a unique twist. Marathon director Sylvia Sanyanga confirmed that preparations for this year’s event are in full swing, with Zumba sessions being a major highlight. “We are excited to have both Zorro and John Cole leading two separate Zumba sessions to provide a variety of experiences for participants. It’s part of our ongoing effort to ensure that athletes get the most value for their participation,” she said.
The Oliver Mtukudzi Half Marathon, now in its fourth edition, will see runners of all levels join in the celebration of the life and legacy of the late music icon, Dr. Oliver Mtukudzi. Dr. Mtukudzi, who passed away on January 23, 2019, was not only a beloved musician but also a staunch advocate for diabetes awareness. The marathon will place a significant focus on raising awareness about the disease, continuing Tuku’s legacy of promoting healthy living.
Registration for the event is still open, with a surge of interest from both individuals and teams eager to participate. Sanyanga expressed hope for an even larger turnout this year, citing the strong support from corporations and teams registering many runners. “We are aiming for a bigger turnout compared to last year, and it’s inspiring to see so many people coming together to honor Tuku’s legacy,” she added.
In addition to the marathon’s races, which include 5 km, 10 km, and 21.1 km options, the Zumba sessions will provide a refreshing and fun way for participants to cool down after the races. The Zumba classes will be followed by medal presentations and refreshments for all runners.
Tuku’s legacy is not only celebrated through the marathon but also through the contributions of the many artists he mentored at Pakare Paye Arts Centre. This year, the Black Spirits Band, a group of Tuku’s protégés, will perform at the event, adding a musical touch to the festivities. In line with the celebration, Tuku’s regalia and music will be auctioned to raise funds for future initiatives in his name.
The Oliver Mtukudzi Half Marathon is a testament to the power of community, health, and music, and this year’s edition promises to be an even more vibrant occasion. Top entertainers, including Jah Prayzah, who was mentored by Tuku, have already endorsed the event, further amplifying its significance. With a packed program of athletics, music, and Zumba, this year’s marathon at Pakare Paye Arts Centre is set to be an unforgettable tribute to a beloved national icon.
