Government Hands Over 72 Tractors and Two Combine Harvesters Worth US$3.7 Million to Youth Bank for Lending to Young Farmers

In a significant move aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and empowering the youth, the government has handed over 72 tractors and two combine harvesters, valued at US$3.7 million, to the Youth Bank for onward lending to young farmers. The machinery, sourced from Belarus, is set to revolutionize farming practices, enabling a more modern and efficient approach to agriculture.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held in the capital on Wednesday, Agriculture Minister Anxious Masuka emphasized that the initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector while enhancing food security. Masuka highlighted the critical role of young people in the future of the country’s agriculture.

“Today, we celebrate the realization of a vision of empowered and self-sufficient youth ready to transform not only the agricultural sector but also the future of our nation,” Masuka said during his address.

He further pointed out that the agricultural sector requires fresh perspectives and innovative solutions, especially in tackling the challenges of food production, climate change, and sustainability. Young minds, he argued, are essential to addressing these pressing issues, which will ultimately secure the nation’s food systems.

Minister Masuka also expressed his gratitude to the various partners who contributed to the success of the project. He acknowledged their invaluable commitment to supporting agricultural development and youth empowerment, which are key to ensuring long-term growth in the sector.

“The Youth Bank played a crucial role in facilitating the project, demonstrating the potential of targeted investments in youth empowerment,” said Masuka, recognizing the institution’s efforts in advancing agricultural modernization.

Under the scheme, farmers who wish to benefit from the machinery will be required to pay 50% of the value of the equipment at a concessionary interest rate, making it more accessible to young people eager to enhance their agricultural operations. This innovative lending approach is expected to provide a significant boost to Zimbabwe’s agricultural productivity while creating opportunities for youth participation and leadership in the sector.

As the government continues to prioritize agricultural modernization, this initiative serves as a stepping stone toward a more sustainable and food-secure future, with the youth at the forefront of transforming the country’s agricultural landscape.
