Hundreds Bid Farewell to Faith Taruvinga, Renowned Fashion Designer

Yesterday, Glen Forest Memorial Park was the setting for a touching send-off as hundreds of mourners gathered to honor Faith Taruvinga, an esteemed Zimbabwean fashion designer. The crowd included an array of notable figures: celebrities, musicians, socialites, business leaders, diplomats, and fashion enthusiasts, all united in celebrating her extraordinary life and legacy.

The news of Taruvinga’s passing at just 42 years old after a prolonged illness sent shockwaves through the nation. Mourners remembered her as a vibrant and passionate individual whose contributions to the fashion industry and beyond left an indelible mark.

A Nation’s Loss

Defence Minister and Zanu PF Chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri paid heartfelt tribute to Taruvinga, lauding her dedication and tireless pursuit of excellence in her craft.

“I am happy that her work has followed her, as seen by the many who have come to mourn. ‘Chihera,’ you fought your own race and have brought us all together,” Muchinguri-Kashiri remarked. She also reflected on Taruvinga’s rise in the fashion world and the relationships she built with influential figures across Zimbabwe.

Zanu PF Politburo member Tendai Chirau echoed these sentiments, calling her a “true daughter of the soil.” He credited Taruvinga as a pivotal force behind the House of Cheneso, a youth-focused project producing Zanu PF regalia and memorabilia.

A Trailblazer in Fashion

Taruvinga’s career highlights spoke volumes of her influence and innovation. She represented Zimbabwe at the prestigious Taormina International Fashion Show in Italy in 2018, sharing the stage with global fashion powerhouses such as Dolce & Gabbana and Giorgio Armani.

She collaborated with renowned Italian handbag designer Salvatore Montanucci and launched her own brand, MimiKay, which specialized in designer clothing, footwear, and accessories. Taruvinga’s versatility also extended to the entertainment industry, where she worked with celebrated musicians like Alick Macheso and Tryson Chimbetu.

A Personal Legacy

Taruvinga’s contributions extended beyond her professional achievements. Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri shared personal anecdotes about Taruvinga’s role as a mentor and guide to her children. “She became like a mother to my children, offering guidance in their times of need,” she said.

Tendai Chirau described her as a maternal figure in his life, saying, “She treated me like her own son. The news of her death is deeply shocking.”
