It’s official. Zimbabwe opens its boarders on 1 December
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has delivered the long awaited news on the reopening of land boarders. In an official tweet, the president said boarders will reopen starting December 1. He wrote, “After nearly 9 months of restrictions, Zimbabwe will begin to open its boarders on December 1st”. The announcement has come as sweet music to the ears of most people who have been failing to visit the country or to leave for neighbouring countries due to lockdown rules. Those that were stranded due to the travel restrictions are breathing a sigh of relief.
South Africa recently lifted some restrictions on their lockdown and moved to level one. This entailed the reopening of the boarders and airports. Most people were disappointed when Zimbabwe delayed in reopening boarders but it was all for a good cause. Government has been hard at work, installing the required infrastructure according to World Health Organization standards on order to deal with the covid 19 pandemic. It seems there has been a lot of progress made and the announcement by ED shows the state of preparedness of the country.
Covid 19 has been ravaging most parts of the world with over half a million infections. The situation has not been at its worst in the country but people have been encouraged to adhere to safety restrictions such as wearing of a mask and social distancing.
Those that spoke to this publication expressed excitement at being allowed to travel again. Cross boarder traders are also optimistic of better days ahead after having to make do with limited sales due to travel restrictions.
