Poultry Project Transforms Lives of Vulnerable Girls at Teen Rescue Mission

Vulnerable girls under the care of Teen Rescue Mission (TRM) are now running successful small businesses, thanks to a life-changing poultry project supported by the Canadian Embassy. What began as a small initiative to commemorate the International Day of the African Child has now blossomed into a sustainable empowerment model.

During a visit to the TRM Youth Centre, Canadian Embassy officials launched the project by donating 50 chicks, chicken feed, and baking ingredients to kick-start practical training for the girls. The aim was to equip them with income-generating skills that would uplift their lives and promote self-reliance.

TRM director Mr Abraham Matuka shared that the impact of the embassy’s support has been both immediate and long-lasting. “The support came at a critical time and has transformed the lives of our girls,” said Mr Matuka. “They are now equipped with poultry farming and baking skills, which are not only income-generating but also empowering in the long term.”

He explained that the girls, once vulnerable and uncertain about their future, are now able to support themselves, contribute to their households, and stay focused on building positive lives.

“At TRM, our goal is to build a generation free from drugs, early pregnancies, crime and gender-based violence. This project speaks directly to that vision,” Mr Matuka said.

Beyond the practical training, he noted that the initiative has boosted the girls’ confidence and encouraged a strong sense of entrepreneurship and accountability. “We are extremely grateful to the Canadian Embassy for believing in community-driven solutions and supporting grassroots development,” he added.

The TRM Youth Centre continues to serve as a safe haven for at-risk youth, offering life skills training, psychosocial support, and rehabilitation services, with a special focus on empowering girls from challenging backgrounds. As the poultry project grows, it stands as a testament to the power of community partnerships in transforming lives.
