St Charles Lwanga students relive horror
Students from Charles Lwanga school in Chimanimani were finally reunited with their parents and relatives after having survived a horrific ordeal because of cyclone Idai that hit some parts of the country.
The students were reunited with their parents at the Roman Catholic cathedral church in Harare. It was an emotional re union as scores of people gathered to welcome their children and others to witness the arrival of the students.
Some of the students narrated how heavy rains had started whilst they were sleeping in their dormitories. The rains and strong wind had then caused land slides and mud and rocks were thrown into the school area hitting the dining hall which in turn toppled onto the dormitories.
This resulted in the death of two students and several others were injured. Another student stated that water tanks and their stands were uprooted and electricity had been cut off.
The students were visibly traumatised. They said they had then been guided by their teachers to leave the school and walk towards the road where it had been badly damaged. They had then encountered soldiers who assisted them to safety.
Charles Lwanga school is in Chimanimani, one of the areas that was hard hit by the cyclone.
