Themba Gorimbo Abandons Library Project in Zimbabwe Due to ‘Interference’
Zimbabwean-born UFC fighter Themba Gorimbo has abandoned his nearly complete solar-powered library project in his hometown, citing interference from local figures. Known as “The Answer,” Gorimbo intended the library to provide educational resources to children in his village, aiming to give back to his community and foster learning opportunities.
Gorimbo shared his decision through a Facebook post, explaining his frustration. “The saddest thing I have to publicly say is that I was trying to build a solar-powered library in my village, and the building was already almost finished,” he wrote. Despite his progress, Gorimbo stated he would dismantle the project to avoid further complications.
Although he did not specify names, Gorimbo suggested that local politicians may have contributed to the challenges he faced. His frustration over these interferences was evident: “I want to do what I want with my money without having people telling me why I must do this and for that. I like to do my part where my heart desires.”
In support, Zimbabwean politician Temba Mliswa spoke out on X (formerly Twitter), noting that he faced similar issues while working to develop his own village through his TPM Foundation. “This is very unfortunate,” Mliswa commented. “These meddling individuals may even think you have your eye on their seats.”
Gorimbo’s decision to abandon the library project has been met with disappointment, especially for the children who would have benefited from the library’s resources. The project was nearly 75% complete, funded directly from Gorimbo’s earnings. While he regrets the outcome, Gorimbo expressed that stepping away from the project offered him some peace.
