Wi-STEM Africa Appoints Dr. Tendai Zengeni as Regional Director for Southern Africa

Wi-STEM Africa has appointed Dr. Tendai Zengeni as its new Regional Director for Southern Africa, a strategic move aimed at expanding opportunities for women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) across the region.

Dr. Zengeni, a Zimbabwean researcher, holds a PhD in Fiber Optics and Nanophotonics and completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in High-Speed Optical Computing. She serves as a lecturer and Chairperson of AI, Software Engineering, and Computer Science at Africa University. In addition, she is Vice Chairperson of the Board at NetOne Cellular, combining academic leadership with industry experience.

Her professional portfolio includes being an African Women in Tech & AI Fellow and active participation in UNESCO initiatives such as Women for Ethical AI and AI Experts Without Borders. In these roles, Dr. Zengeni has promoted digital inclusion, ethical AI, and capacity-building programs for underserved communities.

On her appointment, Dr. Zengeni emphasized her commitment to creating new opportunities for women in STEM. “I am focused on developing impactful programs and strengthening partnerships that empower women and girls, and create new STEM opportunities,” she said.

Wi-STEM Africa is a pan-African initiative dedicated to bridging gender gaps in STEM. The organization provides mentorship, research, and innovation platforms to support women across the continent. Dr. Zengeni’s appointment is expected to strengthen the organization’s efforts in Southern Africa, fostering greater participation and leadership for women in STEM fields.
