Woman charged with murder of journalist Augustine Moyo
The death of journalist and public relations executive Augustine Moyo has taken a twist as his female friend is now facing murder charges. The 38-year-old motoring enthusiast and die-hard Highlanders fan died on Tuesday from internal injuries sustained on Monday evening in a freak accident.Moyo is reported to have been involved in a heated argument with a female friend at Pennywise Shopping Centre in Eastlea in the capital. This culminated in Moyo and the female friend who has only been identified as Sandra tussling for the steering wheel of a Honda Fit vehicle as Sandra tried to drive away.
One eyewitness is quoted as saying,“She (Sandra) tried to drive off but Augustine appeared livid and clinged to the car tussling for the steering (wheel), that is when the lady lost control of the car and rammed into a tree squashing Augustine, he was rushed to Baines (Intercare),”Moyo reportedly suffered a broken pelvis and suspected internal bleeding. On the other hand, his lady friend Sandra also sustained injuries but was discharged from hospital on the same night. Some reports claim that Moyo was squashed between the car and a tree when the driver lost control of the vehicle while other reports say that Moyo was run over by the car. The police are going with the second version that Moyo was run over by Sandra and she is now facing murder charges over the incident.
Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that the matter is now being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Homicide section. Speaking to the online publication, the Zim Morning Post, Nyathi said, “The matter involving the death of Augustine Moyo is being investigated by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Homicide. He died in the early hours of 26 May 2020 after being run over by his girlfriend with a car at a shopping centre in Eastlea, Harare following a dispute,”Moyo is survived by wife Chantelle and three children. Mourners are gathered at his Windsor Park house in Marondera and burial details are yet to be announced.
