Zim wildlife succumbs to drought.

The drought that is currently being experienced in the country has hit hardest on wildlife. In a recent video, veteran news presenter Rumbidzai Takawira highlighted the plight of animals in Maitengwe in Matabeleland. A dead elephant was lying in some muddy water whilst its baby elephant lay besides it. Takawira, who was recently roped in by Wildlife Aid as a wildlife ambassador remarked,” The saddest reality is how powerless we are to help and how devastated our wildlife is”.

Over 120 elephants have succumbed to drought and the parks and wildlife authorities have embarked on a drive to relocate the animals to other areas that have water. The wildlife authority spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the development and said they were moving 600 elephants, 2 prides of lion, 50 Buffalo, 40 giraffes and 2000 impalas. They will be translocated to Save conservancy. This is the biggest translocation in the history of the country.

Zimbabwe prides itself in having an abundance of wildlife and game. Tourist activities are mainly hinged on wildlife activities and camping. The current drought has severely affected natural resources especially in Matabeleland. The meteorological department has predicted that heavy rains can be expected in the coming weeks. Hopefully this will alleviate the effects of drought
