Zimbabwe Seeks US$23.79 Million to Complete Nationwide Demining Efforts

Zimbabwe requires approximately US$23.79 million to complete its nationwide demining efforts, according to Defense Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri. Speaking at a demining dialogue, she stressed the urgency of securing funding to eliminate landmines that continue to threaten lives and hinder development across the country.

The government has committed US$2 million per year for the next three years to support the demining initiative. However, this contribution falls short of the total amount needed, leaving a significant financial gap that could delay the completion of the program.

Decades after the country’s liberation war, landmines remain a serious danger, particularly in border communities. These explosives not only pose a direct threat to civilians but also restrict agricultural activities, limit infrastructure development, and slow economic progress. Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri emphasized the need for both local and international support to ensure Zimbabwe achieves its goal of becoming mine-free by 2028.

“The presence of landmines not only threatens lives but also limits economic potential. We appeal for increased support to ensure Zimbabwe becomes mine-free,” she stated.

Zimbabwe has made considerable progress in clearing landmines, working in collaboration with organizations such as HALO Trust, Norwegian People’s Aid, and the Mine Advisory Group. These partnerships have played a crucial role in providing financial and technical assistance. However, despite the progress, funding shortfalls continue to slow operations, leaving thousands of people vulnerable to unexploded landmines.

Authorities warn that without adequate funding, demining efforts could take longer than expected, prolonging the risk for affected communities. While the government’s contribution is a positive step, external support will be essential in ensuring that Zimbabwe reaches its target and secures a safer future for its citizens.
