Zimbabwe’s Minister of Tourism Barbara Rwodzi Elected Vice President of 26th UN Tourism General Assembly

Zimbabwe has achieved a major milestone in global tourism with Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Barbara Rwodzi elected Vice President of the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly. The announcement was made during the Assembly in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where Minister Rwodzi also chaired the Fourth Plenary Session.
The session focused on a proposal by the Dominican Republic to institutionalise the UN Tourism Africa and Americas Summit and establish a mechanism for South–South cooperation. The initiative received overwhelming support from member states across Africa and the Americas, signalling strong regional backing.
The institutionalised CAF–CAM Summit aims to strengthen cooperation between Africa and the Americas through digital transformation, sustainable tourism, and inclusive economic growth. It will also promote social inclusion, human capital development, and the preservation of cultural heritage and creative industries linked to tourism.
Minister Rwodzi highlighted the significance of Zimbabwe’s election, stating that it reflects the country’s and Africa’s growing leadership in global tourism. “This move underscores Zimbabwe and Africa’s commitment to driving regional integration, knowledge exchange, and sustainable tourism development across the Global South,” she said.
The Ministry of Tourism noted that Minister Rwodzi’s leadership during the Fourth Plenary Session demonstrated Zimbabwe’s capacity to engage effectively in high-level international tourism dialogues. Her role is expected to enhance the country’s profile, attract global investment, and promote Zimbabwe as a premier destination for cultural and heritage tourism.
This achievement positions Zimbabwe as a key voice in shaping international tourism policies and fostering partnerships that support sustainable development and economic growth across regions.
