Hurungwe Arts Festival 2025 to Attract Global Artistic Talent to Karoi

The farming town of Karoi is set to transform into a vibrant cultural hub later this month as it plays host to the 8th edition of the Hurungwe Arts Festival (HAF), running from July 25 to 27. This highly anticipated event will bring together local, regional, and international artists in a celebration of creativity, cultural exchange, and community spirit.

Founded and spearheaded by executive director Joel Zilala, the Hurungwe Arts Festival has grown into one of Zimbabwe’s premier artistic showcases. This year’s edition promises a dynamic blend of music, theatre, dance, and visual arts, making it a key fixture on the national and regional arts calendar.

A major highlight of the festival will be a performance by globally acclaimed cultural ambassadors Tafadzwa and Amy Matamba, known internationally under their brand Mbira Spirit. Based in Canada, the duo is returning to Tafadzwa’s roots in Hurungwe for what promises to be an emotional homecoming show. Their music, steeped in Zimbabwean tradition and infused with a global flair, has earned them international acclaim.

Mbira Spirit recently secured a finalist spot at the prestigious 2025 InterContinental Music Awards (ICMA), a Los Angeles-based competition that recognises outstanding musical talent from across the globe. The awards ceremony is set to take place online on August 24. Last week, the duo also captivated audiences at AfriCa-Fest Canada with a spirited performance that included traditional dances and interactive elements.

“We are ready for the festival and prepared to share the stage with artists from around the world,” said Tafadzwa Matamba. “Our performances are rooted in Zimbabwean cultural heritage, and mbira music continues to speak to our traditional customs and values.”

Zilala confirmed that this year’s festival will host a diverse lineup of performers from across the region and beyond. Among the regional acts is Msanza-Arts-Simple Theatre from Zambia, known for pushing the boundaries of storytelling, as well as Cosca Films, showcasing the best of Zambian cinema. Also representing Zambia are Jah Luther, a soulful musician with a powerful voice, and Uncle DEEZO, a celebrated performer known for his unique blend of music and narrative art.

Sudan-born, Dubai-based artist Jindi will also feature, bringing a fusion of Sudanese traditions with global influences, while South African performer Bhek’zizwe is expected to impress with his innovative musical style. From North America, Canadian artist Jean Gardy will be making his debut at the festival, adding an international flavour to the lineup.

“This is more than just a festival,” Zilala said. “It’s a platform for artistic growth, cultural exchange, and networking among creatives, industry professionals, and audiences from all walks of life. We are excited to bring a festive atmosphere that celebrates the richness of the arts.”

As Karoi prepares to welcome artists and fans alike, the Hurungwe Arts Festival 2025 stands as a testament to the power of cultural celebration and the unifying language of the arts. With an expanding international footprint and deep roots in Zimbabwean tradition, this year’s edition is shaping up to be its most memorable yet.
