Alick Macheso Marks Birthday with Heartfelt Tribute to Family and Band

Shamva-born sungura icon Alick Macheso celebrated his birthday in style on Sunday at Steak House Pub & Grill in Ardbennie, Harare, delivering an emotional performance that doubled as a heartfelt tribute to the pillars of his life: his wife, family, and devoted band.
Speaking to a packed venue of loyal fans and well-wishers, the veteran musician took a moment between performances to express deep gratitude for the support that has sustained his career over the decades.
“I feel humbled by this kind of support, as you came in numbers to celebrate my birthday,” Macheso said, visibly moved by the love in the room. “I also want to thank my wife, Nyadzisai Butau-Macheso, for her love and everything she has done for me. To be honest, this milestone means a lot to me as a band leader, family man, and visionary.”
With a music journey that has spanned more than two decades, Macheso’s words reflected not just celebration, but also introspection. “I can only be grateful to God for all these years, the gift of life, and the opportunity to watch my children grow. I’m also thankful to my family members who have been there for me,” he added.
The birthday event was more than just a party—it was a public acknowledgement of the teamwork and loyalty that have helped define the Macheso brand. Chief among these was his longstanding band, Orchestra Mberikwazvo, which he proudly revealed now includes 36 members.
“I’m grateful for the dedication and passion shown by my band. Each member plays a vital role in making our music what it is,” said Macheso, whose consistency and humility have earned him the nickname “The Sir Alex Ferguson of Sungura.”
Tich Makahamadze, a senior member of the band’s management team, praised Macheso’s leadership both on and off the stage. “As you have noticed, this time around he has decided to focus on the welfare of his band members as part of his celebration,” Makahamadze said. “As he said on stage, his wage bill keeps ballooning, but he isn’t deterred by the fact that he now leads a staff complement of 36 people.”
As one of Zimbabwe’s most beloved musical figures, Macheso’s legacy continues to evolve—not only through his chart-topping music and electrifying performances, but also through the values he upholds as a leader, father, and husband.
Fans left the venue reminded of why Macheso remains a national treasure—his music moves the nation, but it is his heart that truly defines his legend.
