Zimbabwe’s top comedians

Safirio Madzikitire is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedians to come out of Zimbabwe’s film industry. Mukadota rose to prominence in the early 1980s when he played the role “Mukadota” on The Mukadota Family, a Shona drama which ran on Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation Television. Mukadota is best known for his talent of mixing humor and music on stage. Outside axting his songs “KuHanyani” and “Usandisiye” became instant hits and scaled him to dizzy heights.

Zimbabwe’s film industry has never been the same following the death of Phillip Mushangwe who rose to fame courtesy of his character in the popular drama Paraffin. Paraffin was a talented actor who gained notoriety with his jaw-breaking humour. In the ‘Paraffin’ series, he acted as an illiterate individual and inconsiderate individual with no other purpose in life but to feed his stomach.

Also known as ‘Baba vaSorobhi’, Paraffin’s combination with Rhoda Mtembi (mai sorobhi) was so perfect that many people thought that the two were married in real life. Paraffin is credited for being a top actor that was renowned for having the ability to go off script while being able to maintain the core message as intended by the producers of the programme. In the drama, Paraffin played the role of an individual who would do or say just about anything with no regard for the potential damage or consequences of his actions.

Another of the country’s great actors is Mutirowafanza who gained popularity for hilarious comic scenes in the drama titled Mutirowafanza. A strong Manica dialect brought uniqueness to Mutirowafanza who was natural and stands out as one of the greatest actors to come out of Zimbabwe.

Lazarus Boora popularly known as Gringo is another of Zimbabwe’s actors to have made a mark on the local comic scene after his role in Gringo the troublemaker, a local drama which gained a huge following in Zimbabwe. Gringo was a gardner that never ceased to disappoint when it came to amusing viewers that followed the popular show that was screened on Zbc Tv. When one reflects on top local comedians Gringo will be among the top local actors that the country has managed to churn out.

Kapfupi is another of the country’s top comedians having acted with Mai Nga and Marabha in popular series of street theatre that was screened on Zbc Tv. Following his feats while acting on street theatre Kapfupi rose to stardom and eventually entered into the worls of music where he also made a meaningful mark.
