Cyclone Idai death toll rises

The cyclone Idai death toll has risen to 89 according to latest figures released. The natural disaster has left more than 200 missing as the nations grapples with ways of evacuating people in Chipinge and Chimanimani. President Mnangagwa had to cut short his visit to the United Arab Emirates and declared the disaster a state of emergency.

Cyclone Idai has wrecked havoc in the eastern highlands of the country with Chimanimani the most affected as the country was left mourning the lives of many citizens as flash floods destroyed homes, bridges and property.

It was reported St Charles Luwanga students had to be rescued from their school and ferried to Mutare with reports suggesting two students had passed away from the natural disaster. Chimanimani Hotel housed over 200 victims that had to be taken in as the province grappled with the floods.

Civic organisations on Sunday mobilized themselves amid efforts to provide aid for victims of the flood. Popular musician Jah Prayzah was among personalities that joined hands with government officials to provide relief for victims affected by the floods that hit Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Advocate Fortune Chasi alao mobilized resources for victims with Econet involved in frantic fundraising efforts for victims.

Bridges connecting Chipinge and Chimanimani were destroyed leaving road networks in a state of limbo.

The Airforce of Zimbabwe was on Monday on standby to institute rescue operations but the only hindering factor were harsh weather conditions.
