Dorothy Masuka’s impressive legacy

The sudden passing on of Dorothy Masuka brought the music industry to a standstill. Upon receiving news of Masuka’s death tributes began pouring in as music lovers reflect on the great contribution of the jazz singer who was also a renowned song writer.

Social media has been abuzz with tributes thatb have come from fellow artists and fans. South Africa’s Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Muthethwa posted several messages upon Masuka’s death pointing to the talent the late jazz musician was endowed with.  

Masuka who was born on 3 September 1935 passed on, on Saturday. Having been born in Zimbabwe Masuka would spend a lot of her life in South Africa but after compsing anit-apartheid songs the music star would see some of her works being banned on radio.

With political tensions rising Masuka would migrate to Zambia where she worked as a flight attendant. Many of her songs were sung in Ndebele and will be remembered for a fluency about them.

South African president Cyril Ramaphosa was also rattled by Masuka’s death as he sent a condolence message to the late jazz musicians family. Having begun her music career at just the age of 16 Masuka developed into a fine song writer and singer. The superstar would then rise to international fame and was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver for excellent achievement.

A memorial service is set to be held for the iconic jazz musician with funeral arrangements still being finalized by Masuka’s family.  Masuka leaves behind a legacy of excellence on the musical scene.
