Selmor Mtukudzi Urges Couples to Redefine Love Ahead of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is still weeks away, but the feeling of love is already in the air. Musician Selmor Mtukudzi is embracing the season with a message that challenges couples to rethink what love truly means. She is urging partners to look beyond chocolates, flowers and curated social media posts.
The award-winning songstress has called on couples to use Valentine’s Day as a moment of reflection. She believes the season should renew commitment through honest conversation and emotional connection. According to Selmor, love is not measured by grand gestures but by consistency, patience and mutual understanding.
“Valentine’s Day should be more than just gifts and pictures,” Selmor said. “It should give couples a chance to sit down, talk openly and remind each other why they chose this relationship. Love needs to be renewed.” Her message focuses on practical actions that strengthen bonds rather than public displays.
Selmor’s call comes at a time when many relationships face pressure from economic strain, demanding work schedules and changing social expectations. She noted that these realities often leave couples emotionally drained and disconnected. Over time, this distance can lead to misunderstanding and resentment if left unaddressed.
She stressed that renewing vows does not require elaborate ceremonies or public declarations. Instead, it is a conscious decision to recommit, even during difficult seasons. “People grow, life changes and challenges come,” she said. “But love lasts when you keep choosing your partner, even after disagreements, disappointment and long periods of silence. Sometimes renewing vows simply means saying, I still choose you.”
Selmor also cautioned couples against comparing their relationships to idealized images online. She warned that social media often presents selective moments that create unrealistic expectations. Real love, she said, grows in private conversations, active listening and daily effort.
As the daughter of the late music icon Oliver Tuku Mtukudzi, Selmor continues to use her platform to address emotional and social issues affecting families. Her Valentine’s message encourages couples to slow down, reflect and reconnect. The focus, she insists, should remain on nurturing real love that lasts beyond one day.
