FIFA and Saudi Arabia Football Federation Mourn Zimbabwean Striker Tendai Ndoro

World football governing body FIFA and the Saudi Arabia Football Federation (SAFF) have joined the Ndoro family, Zimbabwean fans, and the global football community in mourning the passing of former Warriors striker Tendai Ndoro.

Ndoro, one of Bulawayo’s finest football exports, was found dead at his apartment in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Monday. He was 40.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino sent a message of condolence to Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president Nqobile Magwizi, paying tribute to Ndoro’s impact both at home and abroad.

“I would like to express my sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing of former international player, Tendai Ndoro. Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel for this loss.

“During his international career, Tendai Ndoro was regularly capped by Zimbabwe and notably participated in the 2017 CAF African Cup of Nations. At club level, he defended the colours of Chicken Inn in his home country, as well as several South African clubs, including Orlando Pirates FC. He also played in Saudi Arabia and Oman.

“Legend of Zimbabwe football, known for his talent and resilience, inspiration for many young footballers, his legacy and achievements, and in particular his personality, his leadership, his popularity and his human qualities will not be forgotten, and he will be truly missed,” Infantino wrote.

The FIFA president added that he hoped the support and memories shared would bring solace to the Ndoro family during this painful period.

The Saudi Arabia Football Federation also paid tribute to Ndoro. In a letter signed by president Yasser H Almisehal and addressed to ZIFA, the federation described him as a veteran striker who left a mark during his time in Saudi football.

“It is with immense sadness that we learnt of the passing of Mr Tendai Ndoro, the former veteran striker of the Zimbabwe National Team. On behalf of the Saudi Football Federation (SAFF) and the entire Saudi football family, we express our deepest sympathies to Mr Ndoro’s family and friends during this difficult time. May God bless his soul and provide his loved ones with comfort and serenity,” read the letter.

Ndoro’s football journey began in Bulawayo, where he turned out for Select Stars, Bulawayo Arsenal, Railstars, and Chicken Inn. His goal-scoring exploits at Chicken Inn propelled him to the South African Premiership, where he made an immediate impact with Mpumalanga Black Aces.

He later played for Ajax Cape Town before sealing a high-profile move to Orlando Pirates, where he enjoyed his most successful period in South Africa. His performances opened doors for a move abroad, becoming one of the few Zimbabweans to play in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Faisaly, before later stints in Oman.

At international level, Ndoro earned regular caps for the Warriors and represented Zimbabwe at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. Known for his eye for goal, determination, and leadership on the field, he inspired many young players in Zimbabwe and across the region.

Ndoro’s passing has left a deep void in Zimbabwean football, where he is remembered as a legend whose contributions elevated the country’s presence on the continental stage.
