We’re still lagging behind: Mapeza

Former Warriors coach Norman Mapeza says there is need for football stakeholders to work hard to uplift the standards of our game if Zimbabwe is to compete with the rest of the world.

In a post on social media, the FC Platinum gaffer admitted that the country is still far in terms of football development hence the need to emulate other nations before we start thinking of competing at the international stage.

“It’s sad to be banned because we all want to compete in the CAF Champions League and other international tournaments as a nation, but the truth is we are still lagging behind. Look at Morocco how they have developed over the years, the way they played at the World Cup and you look at us as a country, we’re still far away. Given our state of affairs, do you think if we go and compete at the international stage we will get the results? I believe we have to continue working on improving our game, we start from somewhere and go step by step up the ladder. Football is like a graph you start from stage zero and going upwards, so I don’t think we should go there [international stage] until we reach a certain level where we can be able to compete,” said Mapeza.

Mapeza who has had a colourful career as coach has so far guided FC Platinum to three Castle Lager Premier Soccer League titles.

Meanwhile, FC Platinum are back at their Zvishavane base from their pre-season tour of Bulawayo.
