Zimbabwe’s Under-19 Table Tennis Team Gears Up for ITTF African Youth Championships in Nigeria

Zimbabwe’s Under-19 national table tennis team has arrived in Nigeria, ready to compete at the much-anticipated ITTF African Youth Championships. This marks a significant milestone for Zimbabwe as it continues to invest heavily in youth development within the sport, following closely on the heels of the nation’s Under-13 team’s recent participation in an inspiring “Hopes Week” event.
The three-member squad representing Zimbabwe comprises Trust Madoro, Prophesor Mwatsika, and Shalom Makoni. Their presence at this high-profile continental competition offers an invaluable opportunity to gain international exposure, hone their skills, and measure themselves against some of Africa’s best young talent.
Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union (ZTTU) president Noah Ferenando underscored the importance of this participation. “This is a significant step in providing them with the much-needed exposure and experience on a global stage,” he said, reaffirming the union’s commitment to nurturing and developing promising young athletes.
This tournament participation builds on a recent wave of success for Zimbabwean table tennis. At the African Union Sports Council Games held in Botswana, the Under-19 team secured three bronze medals—an achievement that highlights the growing competitiveness of Zimbabwe’s youth players on the continent.
“These achievements not only showcase our potential but also demonstrate the progress we are making in closing existing gaps in the sport,” Ferenando added, reflecting optimism about the future of table tennis in Zimbabwe.
Leading the team through the challenging schedule, which includes team events, doubles, and singles competitions, is Coach Tinashe Duri. His guidance will be critical as the young players face intense matches against Africa’s emerging talents.
The ZTTU expressed sincere gratitude to key stakeholders who have supported the team’s journey, notably the Sports and Recreation Commission and the Solomon Musiwacho Foundation. “Your unwavering support is crucial as we nurture and develop our young athletes,” Ferenando remarked, recognizing the vital role of these organizations in advancing Zimbabwe’s table tennis ambitions.
As the ITTF African Youth Championships get underway, all eyes will be on Zimbabwe’s trio as they aim to elevate the country’s presence on the continental table tennis stage and inspire a new generation of players.
