Deep Steppers: Bulawayo Duo Pioneering a New Wave of Afro-House
In a music industry dominated by familiar names, Bulawayo-based duo Deep Steppers – Emmanuel “Emmza” Mlilo and Prince Ngulube – are carving a niche with their experimental Afro-house and deep electronic debut EP.
The duo met in 2023, despite coming from different musical backgrounds. Ngulube had experience in hip-hop and Amapiano, while Emmza was producing beats independently. Their first collaboration produced a song that inspired them to continue working together. “We didn’t just want to make music that was already out there. We wanted something unique, a new wave of production,” Ngulube said.
Deep Steppers officially formed in early 2024. Their name reflects their journey into the music scene and their dedication to deep house, Afro-house, and electronic sounds.
For Emmza, music was an unexpected path. Introduced to production in 2018, he quickly developed a passion, drawing inspiration from artists like DJ Ace, Kabza De Small, Chronical Deep, and Zimbabwe’s own Nitefreak. “I wasn’t born into a musical family. Music just found me. I never thought of it as a talent, but over time, I became passionate about it,” he explained.
Ngulube’s musical journey began at 16 in school choirs and talent shows. He also worked as a DJ at events and ceremonies while exploring sports and chess. “For me, music is an art, an imagination. You may admire other artistes, but when it comes to creating your own sound, it’s a completely different field,” he said.
Their upcoming EP reflects their story, exploring themes from love and parties to dancing and shared experiences. It blends celebratory and soulful moments over pulsating Afro-house rhythms, offering a fresh alternative to mainstream sounds.
Deep Steppers emphasize collaboration, supporting fellow creatives rather than chasing fame. Their approach positions them as innovators in Zimbabwe’s music scene, aiming to carry Bulawayo’s sound to new audiences.
Although still at the start of their career, Emmza and Ngulube are determined to stand out, create distinctive music, and push the boundaries of Afro-house and electronic production in Zimbabwe and beyond.
