Zimbabwe Cycling Duo Honoured in Ghana After Epic 22-Country Journey Across Africa

Zimbabwean cycling couple Vusumuzi Mnkandla and Thandolwenkosi Tshuma received a warm and high-profile welcome in Accra, Ghana on Sunday after completing an extraordinary journey across 22 countries over the past 10 months. Their arrival marked another milestone in a long-distance cycling expedition that has drawn attention across the continent for its scale, endurance and cultural impact. The pair were received by Lesley Kupahurasa in the eastern suburb of Tema before continuing their journey into the capital. Later, they were formally welcomed by the Dean of Ambassadors in West Africa and Zimbabwe’s representative in Ghana, Kuga Chinoza. The reception highlighted both diplomatic recognition and public admiration for their cross-continental effort.

After a short rest in Tema, the cyclists continued their journey by bicycle to the Zimbabwe Embassy near Kotoko International Airport, symbolically completing another leg of their ongoing mission. Their arrival at the embassy created a moment of national pride as officials and guests gathered to acknowledge their achievement. The journey through 22 countries has tested their endurance while also showcasing Zimbabwean resilience and determination on a continental stage. Their expedition has not only been about sport but also about promoting African connectivity and tourism through lived experience. Each country they passed through added to a growing narrative of perseverance and cultural exchange.

Ambassador Kuga Chinoza praised the cyclists for their commitment and described them as strong representatives of Zimbabwe on the international stage. He emphasised that their journey has helped market both Zimbabwe and Africa as accessible and connected destinations for travel and adventure. According to him, their decision to cycle across multiple borders demonstrates courage and determination that reflects positively on the country. He also noted that their efforts carry symbolic weight in promoting unity and shared identity across African nations. The ambassador’s remarks placed their journey within a broader diplomatic and cultural context that goes beyond sport.

The event in Accra also brought together media and social media personalities, including well-known West African influencer Wode Maya, who has a large global online following. His meeting with Thandolwenkosi Tshuma was particularly emotional as the two had followed each other on social media for years but had never met in person. The encounter highlighted the growing connection between digital influence and real-world travel experiences. It also reinforced the visibility of the cyclists’ journey beyond traditional media platforms. Their story has attracted attention from both online audiences and diplomatic circles, expanding its reach significantly.

Guests at the reception were treated to Zimbabwean cuisine and a relaxed evening gathering that brought together officials, influencers and supporters. The atmosphere reflected celebration and cultural exchange, with conversations continuing late into the evening. At the same time, reports indicated that Zimbabwe was celebrating sporting success elsewhere in the city, adding to the national mood of pride. The cyclists’ journey also included difficult decisions, including a planned route to Burkina Faso that was later abandoned due to safety concerns. This adjustment reflects the practical challenges faced during long-distance travel across multiple regions.

As the journey continues, Mnkandla and Tshuma have not yet decided on their next destination, leaving their expedition open-ended for now. Their 10-month journey has already covered thousands of kilometres and crossed diverse landscapes, cultures and political borders. Supporters see them as symbols of endurance and national pride, while also recognising the physical and logistical demands of such an undertaking. Their story continues to inspire conversations around adventure tourism and African mobility. The Accra reception stands as a major highlight in a journey that continues to evolve across the continent.
