Social media weighs in on Hopewell Chin’ono and Fadzayi Mahere arrest

Social media users have been zooming in on the recent arrest of award winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono. The controversial and loud mouthed journalist was arrested a few days ago on charges of communicating false hoods. He had claimed that a police officer had killed a baby strapped onto his mother’s back after trying to hit the mother with a baton stick. The Zimbabwe republic police later issued a statement and said the allegations were not true. They said neither the mother or the child had been injured in the video doing the rounds on social media.

Advocate Fadzayi Mahere was also arrested on the same charge after writing on her Facebook page about the incident. Police have been on a manhunt and arresting people who claimed that the baby in the video had died as a result of the assault.

Most people have vented anger at the police for arresting Chin’ono and Mahere. This would be one of the numerous arrests on Chin’ono who has been in and out of remand prison frequently of late. He has been arrested in charges of inciting public violence, insulting the office of the president and most recently communicating falsehoods. He was also picked up by police recently for apparently violating the terms of his bail conditions

Chin’ono has also had several confrontations with other people on social media including music sensation Jah Prayzah
