Simai Creations Launches Shona and Shona-English Storybooks for Young Children

Simai Creations, a new children’s book brand founded by Lillian Myezwa, has introduced a collection of Shona and Shona-English storybooks aimed at supporting early language development while strengthening cultural identity among young learners. The brand was inspired by Myezwa’s personal search for simple, age-appropriate Shona materials for her own children. Finding few resources that combined cultural relevance with suitability for early learners, she created Simai Creations to make Shona accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for young readers.

The debut collection includes Shona-only titles that encourage natural language immersion and bilingual Shona-English books to assist parents and caregivers who may not be fluent in the language. The stories focus on everyday themes such as family life, play, animals, and the human body, using repetition, clear illustrations, and relatable scenarios to help children link language with daily experiences. Myezwa explained, “Language is often the first connection children have to culture and identity. By introducing Shona early, in a way that feels natural and enjoyable, we are helping children build confidence in who they are and where they come from.”

Simai Creations targets families in Zimbabwe and the diaspora, supporting households navigating multilingual environments where English often dominates. The brand aims to place African languages at the heart of early childhood learning, contributing to the preservation and everyday use of Shona. By engaging children in storytelling that reflects their culture, Simai Creations fosters both language skills and a sense of heritage.

The initiative has received praise for its thoughtful approach to literacy and cultural education. Parents and educators note that the combination of clear language, repetition, and vibrant illustrations makes it easier for children to understand concepts while enjoying the learning process. The books also provide a platform for parents to engage with their children in Shona, strengthening family connections through shared reading.

Simai Creations plans to expand its offerings with additional books and learning resources, with the goal of nurturing a new generation of children who connect with their heritage through storytelling. There are ambitions to adapt the books into other Zimbabwean languages, broadening their reach and impact. As the brand grows, it positions itself as a key contributor to both language preservation and early childhood literacy in Zimbabwe and beyond.
