Skyler Ndebvu, Grade Six Prodigy, Publishes Debut Children’s Book Tafara’s Wish

Skyler Ndebvu, a Grade Six pupil at Sinoia Primary School, has made headlines as one of Zimbabwe’s youngest published authors with her debut children’s book, Tafara’s Wish. The book launch, held at her school last week, drew admiration from teachers, parents, and fellow learners for the literary accomplishment of the young writer.

Skyler credits her brother, Robson, a passionate public speaker and poet, as her inspiration. “I want to thank my brother for inspiring me to write. I admire his public-speaking skills and that encourages me a lot,” she said during the launch.

In addition to her debut book, Skyler, who also writes poetry, revealed plans for her next work, Echoes of Pain, inspired by her poem Tears from an Abused Child, set for release early next year. She balances schoolwork and writing by dedicating early mornings and weekends to her craft, often beginning as early as 4am.

Tafara’s Wish follows Tafara, a wealthy young man from Madziva, Guruve, on a quest to recover a “long-lost wish” from a mystical old woman in Chininga Forest. His journey pits him against Chief Chitema, the antagonist responsible for stealing a precious map from Tafara’s parents, leading to their tragic deaths. Skyler intentionally incorporated African elements to give the story a local flavour. “At first, it was a Western-style adventure, but I later set it in an African context to promote our culture,” she explained.

Skyler’s editor, Aleck Kaposa, praised her storytelling skills and avid reading habit. As part of Creative Kids at Essentials, a mentorship programme supporting young Zimbabwean writers, she refined her story from a Eurocentric adventure titled The Lost City into Tafara’s Wish, showcasing African names, settings, and culture. Kaposa noted that her book is available on Amazon and was one of three titles by Mashonaland West girls highlighted during this year’s World Literacy Day in Harare.

Skyler Ndebvu’s early literary achievements mark her as one of Zimbabwe’s most promising young writers. With Tafara’s Wish already receiving recognition and Echoes of Pain on the horizon, she is set to continue inspiring readers while balancing her school commitments.
