Zimbabwe Receives First Aid from EU Since 02

Sanctions were put on Zimbabwe is the early 2000’s and the European Union stopped aiding Zim in 2002. The EU lifted sunctions off Zimbabwe late last year and nobody knew what would happen next since the relations between the two had deteriorated.

But now on 2015 February 20 EU gave the first direct aid donation to President Mugabe’s government since 2002. EU has resumed its aid by giving the country around $270m. Announced on Monday in Harare, the aid will support health care, agriculture and good governance projects over the next six years.

Due to pressure from African nations, the EU has over time removed travel and financial restrictions over some Zimbabwean officials . Sanctions on President Mugabe and his wife Grace are however still intact.
