WHO Places Processed Meat In Group 1 List Of Colorectal Cancer Causes

With Cancer being said to be more dangerous than HIV/AIDS, it’s advisable to prevent the things that you can for your health’s sake. A France based International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) which is part of WHO has placed processed meat in Group 1 list of colorectal cancer causes.

Processed meat mostly contains pork or beef and includes sausages, canned meat and anything smoked. The report also says consumption of processed meat is also associated with stomach cancer.

Dana Loomis, the deputy head of the monographs section at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France said, “Our expert working group estimated that the consumption of processed meat increases the risk of colorectal cancer about 18 per cent per 50 gram portion eaten daily, In relative terms, that’s about one-tenth of the cancer risk associated with cigarette smoking.”

Doctors also warned that a diet high in red meat is linked to cancers, including those of the colon and pancreas.

According to the cancer agency, the Global Burden of disease project suggests 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide are linked to diets heavy in processed meat.

It might be difficult for some to completely avoid processed meat but everything in moderation can save your life.
