Vimbai Zimuto image causes furore
Zimbabwean musician Vimbai Zimuto who is based in the Netherlands left many people with mouths agape after posing for a photo naked. The image which was taken on a beach sent tongues waggling with a lot of people expressing shock and dismay.
Vimbai defended her craft saying that as a musician she was simply trying to emulate her ancestors who were never bothered by walking around naked. She reiterated that the said ancestors never questioned such issues and people ought to embrace their heritage.
The image has really opened up a debate on the issue of women and restrictions imposed by society in expressing their sexuality. A few months ago, veteran radio and television personality misred was criticized for posing in a skinny two piece body suit. She also stood up for herself and lashed at the critics for trying to put barriers in the way women, particularly heavily built women, should dress and express themselves.
Radio and television host Hazvinei Sakarombe was also the subject of social media abuse a few years ago when she posted photos of herself on the beach in a swimsuit. The issue that arises from these instances is whether or not women will ever be free from the stereotypes formulated in today’s world pertaining to dress codes.
It is not an issue of religion or culture but merely a set of standards that have been preset. As people celebrate international women’s month this March such issues must be reflected upon and future generations must have informed guidance on such matters.
