Sakhile Dube Shines at Miss Universe Despite Top 12 Miss
Zimbabwe’s Sakhile Dube showcased resilience and poise at the 2024 Miss Universe pageant held in Mexico, finishing in the prestigious top 30. The event, marked by dazzling displays of talent and culture, saw Denmark’s 21-year-old dancer Victoria Kjær Theilvig crowned as Miss Universe, making history as the first Dane to win the coveted title. Nigerian beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina secured the position of first runner-up, while Mexico’s Maria Fernanda Beltran was named second runner-up. Completing the top five were Thailand’s Opal Suchata Chuangsri and Venezuela’s Ileana Marquez.
Despite Sakhile’s overwhelming popularity and her inclusion on several social media “hot picks” lists, she did not advance to the top 12, leaving her many supporters in Zimbabwe and beyond disappointed. Notably, she also did not qualify for the Voice For Change competition, a significant segment where contestants present impactful videos on social issues they champion.
Clad in a breathtaking gown designed by local fashion maestro Ishmael Tsakatsa of the Zarguesia brand, Sakhile exuded elegance and pride. Ahead of the grand finale, she expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support from Zimbabweans, saying, “I step onto the final stage of Miss Universe, representing my beautiful country, Zimbabwe. I look back at the journey that has brought me here… Your unwavering belief in me has been my fortress.”
Sakhile emphasized that her experiences reflected the spirit of Zimbabwe, characterized by resilience and strength. “I am proud to represent our nation, a land rich in beauty and potential, and I hope to make you proud,” she noted. She also acknowledged the Miss Universe Zimbabwe Organization for their support and the platform it provided for young women to inspire and pursue their dreams.
Social media was abuzz with praise following her top 12 exit. Harare resident Lupita Makomborero stated, “We loved Sakhile and have accepted the results. However, her participation united us as a nation.” Monalisa Paradzai, a local hairdresser, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the opportunities that await Sakhile in the fashion and entertainment industries: “This is not the end for her. There is a lot she can do… Well done, Sakhile.”
Sakhile’s journey at Miss Universe may not have ended with the ultimate crown, but her grace and impact left an indelible mark, inspiring Zimbabweans and showcasing the nation’s talent on a global stage.
