Boran Breeders Showcase Finest Livestock at Year-End Fatstock Show

As 2024 draws to a close, the Zimbabwe Boran Breeders Society (ZBBS) is set to host its second Boran, Heifer, Bull, and Fatstock Show on December 4, 2024. This highly anticipated event, taking place at C.C. Sales in Mt Hampden, begins at 9 a.m. and promises to be a vibrant gathering for cattle enthusiasts, breeders, and butchers.

A Platform to Showcase Excellence

Following the success of the inaugural event in 2023, where renowned American livestock judge Mr. P.J. Budler praised the quality of Boran cattle, this year’s show is poised to surpass expectations. “The Boran on offer was of a very high standard,” Mr. Budler commented last year. “They were adapted, functional, and easy-fleshing cattle.”

This year, breeders are eager to present their finest livestock, offering a wide selection that caters to both seasoned farmers and newcomers to the industry.

Diverse Livestock on Display

The show will feature an impressive array of livestock:

  • Six premium bulls with robust genetics and excellent health, ideal for breeding and fatstock purposes.
  • 57 fatstock steers, classified as top-quality young supper grade Boran, perfect for immediate market needs.
  • 80 heifers, ranging from commercial to stud quality, meeting diverse breeding requirements.

“This year’s selection will be unmatched,” said ZBBS spokesperson Mr. Collen Tafireyi. “Whether you’re an experienced breeder or just starting, there’s something for everyone.”

Educational Sessions for Farmers

In addition to showcasing livestock, the event will offer educational sessions aimed at improving cattle farming practices.

  • “Preparing Your Cows for Breeding” by William Augustyn from Fivet.
  • “Bulk in Boran? Feedlot Experiences from Zimbabwe and South Africa”, featuring insights from seasoned farmers Mark Hook and Colin Langton.

These sessions will provide valuable knowledge on optimizing breeding practices and livestock management.

Fatstock Competition and Awards

A highlight of the event is the Fatstock Competition, where livestock will be judged in categories such as milk tooth, 2 tooth, 4 tooth, and 6 tooth. Champion Steers and Reserve Champions will be recognized, celebrating the excellence and dedication of Boran farmers.

Strengthening the Farming Community

Mr. Tafireyi emphasized the importance of such events, stating, “Events like these are crucial for our industry. They provide a platform for farmers to network, share experiences, and learn from one another, which ultimately strengthens the entire cattle farming community in Zimbabwe.”

This year’s Boran, Heifer, Bull, and Fatstock Show promises to be an unforgettable experience, combining education, competition, and celebration. Whether you’re looking to invest in high-quality livestock or simply learn more about the Boran breed, this is an event not to be missed.
