Mitambo International Theatre Festival 2025 Attracts Spain and Switzerland Acts

Organisers of the annual Mitambo International Theatre Festival have confirmed international participation at this year’s edition, with theatre groups from Spain and Switzerland set to perform in Harare from September 11 to 13, 2025.

Now in its seventh year, the festival has become a vibrant platform for artistic expression, cultural exchange, and professional development. Hosted at the iconic Reps Theatre in Harare, the festival is organised by the Zimbabwe Theatre Academy and is growing into one of the country’s premier cultural showcases.

In an interview with the Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, the festival’s artistic director, Teddy Mangawa, shared key highlights of the upcoming edition and the festival’s expanding global reach.

“We can confirm participation from groups in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, Spain, and Switzerland,” said Mangawa. “Locally, we have secured collaborations with various institutions. To date, we have hosted six successful editions.”

Mangawa emphasized that the 2025 edition will stand out for its bold programming and thematic focus. Running under the theme #Redefine, this year’s festival aims to challenge conventions and celebrate creative innovation.

“What sets this edition apart is the deliberate inclusion of community-based performances and a strong focus on digital theatre and sustainability,” he explained. “We’re curating a bold mix of traditional and experimental work, pushing boundaries and challenging norms.”

While Reps Theatre will serve as the main venue, the festival will also extend into local communities through a special clown tour scheduled to take place in Harare, Chimanimani, and Chipinge — including performances at the Tongogara Refugee Camp.

The festival’s commitment to inclusivity and social impact has earned it a reputation for not only celebrating art but also creating dialogue and access for diverse audiences.

With participation from European theatre companies and local partnerships already confirmed, Mitambo 2025 promises to be a compelling blend of global talent and local creativity, uniting artists and audiences under a shared vision of theatrical excellence.
