Shamiso Mutsahuni Brings Pride to Zimbabwe with Bronze Medal at African Spelling Bee

Zimbabwe is celebrating a remarkable achievement as Shamiso Mutsahuni, a bright student from Irene Christian College (ICC), clinched the bronze medal at the 7th edition of the African Spelling Bee held recently in Abuja, Nigeria. Competing in the senior category against some of the sharpest young minds from across the continent, Mutsahuni’s exceptional performance earned her a prestigious third-place finish, putting Zimbabwe on the podium in this prestigious continental competition.

The African Spelling Bee, one of the premier spelling competitions in Africa, gathered top spellers from seven countries, namely Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Zambia, Benin, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, and Ghana. This competition is a true test of both intellect and endurance, bringing together young scholars to showcase their language and spelling skills in a highly competitive environment.

Mutsahuni was part of an outstanding team representing Zimbabwe, which included Ivainashe Mbanda (Kyle College), Chelsea Chingaira (Kyle College), Lauren Phillips (Uppervale College), Anisha Zvina (Goldridge), and Mufaro Munyaradzi (Celebration International School). Each of these spellers contributed to the country’s proud showing, with Mutsahuni’s bronze medal making the most significant mark on the event.

The competition not only highlighted the participants’ spelling prowess but also fostered cultural exchange and camaraderie among the contestants. Zimbabwe’s performance at this year’s African Spelling Bee serves as a testament to the growing academic talent within the country and its continued success in international arenas.
