Feli Nandi Rejects “Female Artiste” Label and Demands Recognition for Talent

Felistus “Feli Nandi” Chipendo has publicly expressed frustration with being labelled a “successful female artiste,” insisting that her achievements stem from talent and hard work, not her gender. She believes the label carries implications that her success is linked to sympathy or favoritism.

Speaking at the 2025 Kadoma Music Festival held at The Odyssey, Feli Nandi reinforced her stance, calling for recognition simply as an “artiste” or “musician.” Her performance at the festival left a lasting impression, underscoring her artistic prowess.

“It doesn’t make sense to me when people keep referring to me as a ‘successful female artiste’ because it carries serious implications if you read between the lines,” she said. “Many people think we are favoured because of our gender or that we are not good enough. It has been painful because I want to be known as an artiste who rose through hard work, not gender. I have been steadily building this empire for years, and it is due to my hard work, not my gender.”

Feli Nandi expressed concern about persistent stereotypes in the music industry. She called on the public to stop classifying artistes by gender and to acknowledge effort and skill. “I have been working hard to be where I am, and I will continue to do so for the growth of my success. I want to be remembered for the good work we have done over the years,” she stated.

She attributed her consistency to goal-setting, collaboration, and teamwork. “I set goals and hardly disappoint when it comes to meeting my targets. I ensure everything is planned and stick to my goals, and everything else that comes thereafter is a bonus for me and my team,” she told Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub.

Beyond music, Feli Nandi is involved in fashion, design, catering, and mentoring. She highlighted that success requires structured work and a dedicated team. “I have a clear programme outlining my roles, and I have been fulfilling them despite challenges. I don’t work alone; we have achieved all this as a group of hard workers,” she explained.

Feli Nandi’s journey from a backing vocalist and dancer with Mhodzi Tribe to award-winning solo artiste demonstrates resilience. “I have always challenged myself to be outstanding in whatever I am doing, and that gives me the edge to excel. I started from the bottom and have been patient, knowing my time to shine would come,” she added.

Her career breakthrough followed years of determination and networking. After moving between bands seeking opportunities, she joined Ashton “Mbeu” Nyahora’s camp, though their collaboration ended abruptly over alleged indiscipline. Her talent, however, did not go unnoticed. United Kingdom-based comedian Prosper “Comic Pastor” Ngomashi supported her early career by producing her music videos for free, acting as a mentor and father figure.

Feli Nandi has since become a household name, winning multiple awards at the NAMAs and ZIMAs, solidifying her position in Zimbabwe’s music industry. She continues to push boundaries, demanding recognition for skill, dedication, and creativity rather than gender.
