DJ Stout: Bulawayo’s Rising Star Lighting Up Zimbabwe’s Party Scene

As the festive season approaches, DJ Stout is quickly becoming a name synonymous with energy and originality. Born Bradley Andile Masawi in Bulawayo, he has one mission: to make people move and to do it his way.

Stout has performed at major events including HCM Festival, Piano Fest, Bulawayo Shutdown, Shorts and Shades, Piano Cuzzle, and House in CBD. His style blends Naija music, Kwaito, Amapiano, Hip-Hop, Electro, Afro-Tech, and Deep House, creating a sound uniquely his own.

“The name DJ Stout has two meanings for me. One is bold and brave, and the other suggests being naughty while appearing innocent,” he said. The name originated from friends describing his character during a gathering, and it became his stage identity.

His journey began with passion rather than payment. Nights out with friends became study sessions, observing other DJs and learning the craft. His first paid gig came when managers at a city steakhouse, Ezra and Taurai, gave him a shot behind the decks. “That was the first time I was paid. It made me work harder because I realised this could actually become something,” he said.

Stout is an open-format DJ, comfortable across multiple genres, but house music remains his core focus. “I study the crowd first, then play what I need to keep them happy,” he explained. Preparation is key; he spends at least three days planning each set, researching previous DJs and the audience to ensure a memorable performance.

Beyond DJing, Stout has ventured into music production. He has collaborated with international and local producers, including Mr Rain from the US and Bulawayo’s Just Percy, but prefers to release tracks only when fully polished.

His growth has been shaped by the local music scene. Interactions with artists like Mzoe7 and Ma9ine taught him the importance of relationships and public relations. Standout gigs include the Unlock Party at Lobengula West, which highlighted emerging talent, and a packed show at The Smokehouse on December 30, 2022, where a fan’s gesture of throwing money in appreciation made a lasting impression.

Now managed by Harris Entertainment’s Jordan Dube, Stout is preparing for the next chapter. He credits early mentors like DJ Smith on Deck from Harare and acknowledges the support of his family and friends, especially Sisa, who has been his constant companion.

Looking forward, Stout dreams of performing at Zimbabwe’s Garden of House and representing the country on global stages. He wants audiences to be impressed, curious, and eager to learn more about the young Bulawayo talent behind the decks.
