Dr Jane Doka: Zimbabwean Gospel Star in the UK Reflects on Roots and Global Impact

United Kingdom-based gospel singer, academic, and preacher Dr Jane Doka has spent over two decades building a life abroad, yet she remains deeply connected to her Zimbabwean roots. Known for spiritually uplifting songs like “Gore Remakomborero,” “Munamato Une Simba,” and “Hatirase Tariro,” Doka has maintained her prominence in the gospel music scene both locally and internationally.
As 2025 draws to a close, Doka reflected on her journey, sharing her longing for home and desire to reunite with family after 20 years overseas. In a recent interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub senior writer Trust Khosa, Doka provided insight into her career, personal life, and plans for the future.
When asked about her career this year, Doka described 2025 as “the year of my release back into music and launching into a wider audience.” She explained that while she spent recent years focusing on church performances and songwriting, her latest release, “Because God Said It,” represents the culmination of behind-the-scenes work and divine preparation.
Looking ahead, Doka shared that she plans to continue engaging fans with her recent release until the end of the year and hinted at new music in early 2026. She emphasized her belief in reaching a broad audience, saying that living abroad has allowed her to see the world as a platform to share her music and message.
Despite her global presence, Doka admitted she misses Zimbabwe deeply, particularly her family and local cuisine. She also noted missing the seasonal weather, which reminds her of home.
For upcoming gospel artists, Doka advises staying true to God and oneself, encouraging persistence and self-belief as key to overcoming limitations. She urged fans to enjoy the festive season responsibly while keeping faith central in their lives.
Balancing her roles as a mother, academic, pastor, and musician, Doka uses a system she calls the 3Ps: pray, plan, and prioritise. She stressed that careful planning and divine guidance are essential to managing her busy life.
Addressing social challenges in Zimbabwe, Doka expressed concern over drug and substance abuse among the youth. She called for collaborative action involving government, communities, families, and civic organizations to protect and guide young people.
Doka’s profile reflects a multifaceted life. She is a worship leader, singer-songwriter, pastor, and academic specializing in International Education and Development, focusing on gender, inclusion, and youth issues. With over 18 years in gospel music, she has released four albums and four singles, performed in Zimbabwe and the UK, and hosted concerts and worship events. She also leads a local church assembly, trains young musicians, and runs a foundation supporting widows and orphans. Doka is married and a mother of two.
Dr Jane Doka’s story is a testament to dedication, faith, and maintaining cultural roots while achieving international success. Her commitment to music, ministry, and social impact continues to inspire both Zimbabweans at home and the diaspora.
