Former Zimbabwe Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko Passes Away at 84
Phelekezela Mphoko, a former Vice President of Zimbabwe, seasoned diplomat, businessman, and military commander, has died at the age of 84. The news was confirmed by George Charamba, spokesperson for President Emmerson Mnangagwa, though the cause of death remains undisclosed. The President is expected to release an official statement soon.
Mphoko’s passing comes amid significant controversy, as it follows accusations made by his son, Siqokoqela Mphoko, who alleged his father orchestrated a false rape charge against him. Siqokoqela’s conviction for allegedly raping a 12-year-old niece had recently been overturned due to concerns about the evidence’s credibility.
A Life of Service and Controversy
Born on June 11, 1940, in Bulawayo, Phelekezela Mphoko was a pivotal figure in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. He served as a commander in the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA), the military arm of PF-Zapu, during the war for independence. After independence, he transitioned to a career in diplomacy, holding ambassadorial positions in South Africa, Russia, and Botswana.
In 2014, Mphoko was appointed Second Vice President of Zimbabwe, a position he held until 2017 when a military coup ousted him and other high-ranking officials associated with the late President Robert Mugabe.
Business Ventures and Legal Troubles
Beyond politics, Mphoko was an entrepreneur with interests in cattle ranching and retail. He was a shareholder in Choppies Zimbabwe, a supermarket chain, but his involvement ended in 2018 following disputes with other shareholders.
In recent years, Mphoko faced legal challenges, including charges of criminal abuse of office stemming from his time as Vice President. His appeal against these charges was dismissed by the Supreme Court in June 2024, and his trial was ongoing at the time of his death.
Family and Legacy
Mphoko is survived by his wife, Laurinda Mphoko, and their children. His legacy is a blend of military heroism, political service, and business acumen, shadowed by the controversies that marked his later years.
As Zimbabwe reflects on the life of Phelekezela Mphoko, his contributions to the country’s liberation and post-independence governance remain a significant part of its history. Further updates are expected as President Mnangagwa and other officials respond to his passing.
