DJ Josh Major Enters New Chapter With Inner Visions Afro House Compilation

Afro House producer and wheelspinner DJ Josh Major, born Joshua Kudzaishe Murwira, is entering a new phase of his artistic journey through his inclusion in Inner Visions, a collaborative compilation showcasing the growing sound of Zimbabwe’s Afro House community. Curated by Dr Feel, the project brings together 16 DJs, artistes and producers around a shared creative vision rooted in collaboration, cultural identity and musical expression. DJ Josh Major contributes Kumba, a track that reflects his Zimbabwean roots while connecting with the wider Afro House sound. His involvement places his work alongside established and emerging names from Zimbabwe’s electronic music scene, including DJ Stavo, Dr Chaii, Nitefreak, Ryansyth, MIčI, Reverb, TAPIWA, Simbai, Tashinga, Shona (SA), PA NGU, Afro Wav, Takue SBT, Daphfinee and Taarof Adder. For Josh Major, the compilation represents more than another release, as it creates an opportunity for Zimbabwean artists to unite behind a common ambition of taking their music beyond the country’s borders.

Josh Major said working on Inner Visions has given him the opportunity to collaborate with fellow artists while contributing to a project that highlights the evolving sound of Zimbabwe’s electronic music community. He described the collective approach as an important part of the project because it brings artists together around one musical direction. The producer sees unity within the local Afro House community as a way to strengthen the visibility of Zimbabwean electronic music. He said it is important to see artists working together to push Zimbabwean Afro House beyond borders. This perspective reflects a broader focus in his career, where production, DJ performance and collaboration come together to establish a distinct musical identity.

Josh Major has spent more than a decade developing his craft as a self-taught producer and DJ. His musical journey began in Bulawayo, where his early exposure to house music helped shape his interest in electronic production. Experimenting with music on a family computer gave him an early opportunity to explore production and develop his skills independently. Over time, that early curiosity developed into a sustained career focused on Afro House, DJ performance and music production. His background in Bulawayo remains an important part of his artistic identity, particularly as he continues to incorporate Zimbabwean influences into music designed for audiences beyond the country.

His musical influences include South African artists and producers such as Black Coffee, DJ Kent, Euphonik and Julian Gomes. These influences have helped inform his understanding of Afro House, particularly its melodic qualities, rhythmic structures and ability to connect local musical traditions with international electronic music audiences. Josh Major has developed a sound that combines melodic creativity, intricate percussion and Zimbabwean musical influences. His production style reflects an ongoing exploration of the relationship between his musical roots and the wider Afro House landscape. Rather than treating his cultural background as separate from contemporary electronic music, he uses it as part of the foundation for his creative approach.

Josh Major’s catalogue includes several collaborations and releases that have contributed to the development of his sound. His work includes Mweya, a collaboration with DJ Stavo and Bryan K, as well as Abalele, featuring MJ Sings and GhostZWE. He has also released Makhokhoba to Mbare and Parinobuda Zuva, both of which reflect his interest in connecting his music to Zimbabwean identity and experience. His Our Roots project through Lagera Records further demonstrates his focus on exploring musical connections between heritage and contemporary electronic production. Together, these releases form part of an expanding body of work that positions Josh Major within Zimbabwe’s developing Afro House movement.

Kumba represents another stage in that creative development. The title means “home” in Shona, giving the track a direct connection to Josh Major’s Zimbabwean identity. For the producer, the concept of home provides a way to express his origins while creating music that can reach listeners in other parts of the world. The track therefore fits naturally within the wider purpose of Inner Visions, which brings artists together while giving their individual sounds space within a collective project. Kumba also reinforces Josh Major’s interest in using Afro House as a platform through which Zimbabwean musical influences can engage with international audiences. The song adds a personal dimension to his contribution while remaining part of the compilation’s broader collaborative direction.

Alongside his studio work, Josh Major has continued to build his profile as a performing DJ. His performance history includes appearances at Garden of House Festival in Bulawayo and Roots in Harare, as well as performances at Alliance Française, Emagumeni, Smoke House, Moto Republik, Afro Politan, Box Park and Kings Kraal. He has also shared a stage with Nitefreak and Samuel Cosmic at Roots in Harare. His appearance at Garden of House Festival represented an important milestone because it was his first experience performing on a major stage. These performances have given him opportunities to take his production work into live environments while connecting directly with audiences within Zimbabwe’s electronic music scene.

Radio and digital music platforms have also provided Josh Major with exposure beyond Zimbabwe. His music has received attention through radio and music platforms in countries including Ethiopia, Canada and the United Kingdom. This international exposure forms part of his wider ambition to develop an audience that extends beyond his home country. For an independent artist building a career across production and DJ performance, reaching listeners in different markets can create opportunities for collaborations, bookings and further music discovery. Josh Major’s focus on international audiences therefore complements his stated goal of using his Zimbabwean identity as a foundation for broader Afro House engagement.

Looking ahead, Josh Major is pursuing new collaborations, international performances and opportunities to connect with audiences across Africa and beyond. He has identified South Africa, Kenya, France and Ibiza among the markets he hopes to reach as his career develops. His upcoming work includes collaborations with South African Afro House vocalist Ayah Tlhanyane and Nigerian vocalist EL-JAY, alongside additional music currently in development. He has also set himself the personal ambition of reaching one million monthly listeners across digital streaming platforms. These goals indicate a clear focus on expanding his audience while continuing to develop his production style and relationships within the Afro House community.

The significance of Inner Visions for Josh Major lies in its combination of individual creativity and collective ambition. By contributing Kumba to a compilation featuring artists from Zimbabwe’s Afro House community, he becomes part of a project designed to showcase the depth and diversity of the country’s electronic music culture. His contribution also continues a personal journey that began with experimentation on a family computer in Bulawayo and has developed through years of self-directed learning, releases, collaborations and live performances. His music draws from Zimbabwean influences while remaining connected to the broader Afro House movement shaped by artists across Africa and internationally. As Josh Major continues to pursue collaborations, performances and new audiences, Inner Visions provides another platform for him to strengthen his identity as a Zimbabwean Afro House producer and wheelspinner. Kumba ultimately represents both a connection to home and another step toward his ambition of bringing Zimbabwean Afro House to listeners beyond the country’s borders.
