Madlela Skhobokhobo Withdraws from Bulawayo Arts Awards Nomination

Multi-talented artiste Madlela Skhobokhobo has officially withdrawn his nomination for Outstanding Online Content Creator at the 8th edition of the Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAAs). The ceremony is scheduled for December 20 at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC) Hall 3. Madlela was nominated alongside fellow creatives Sipho Mercent Nyathi, Umnikazi Wempuphu, and Chik Aljoy.
Explaining his decision, Madlela described his withdrawal as a gesture of humility and a way to allow emerging talents a chance to shine. He noted that he already holds seven BAA awards, which he believes gives him the perspective to step aside. “Thank you so much to the organisers of the BAAs for the nomination. But, with all due respect, I would like to decline it. In my career, I have won almost everything. At home, I’m sitting with seven BAA gongs if I’m not mistaken,” he said.
Madlela reflected on his history with the BAAs, highlighting the impact the awards have had on his career. He recalled winning three awards in a single night in 2018, which he described as a career-defining moment. “The BAAs elevated my career in 2018 when I won three awards in one night, and I think it’s time I let others dance and shine. I am now waiting for a Lifetime Achievement Award,” he added.
In a show of support for fellow creatives, Madlela suggested that his place in the category be given to Mahlalela Comedy Skits. He praised the Ntabazinduna-bred comedian for exceptional work during the year. However, his recommendation has sparked debate on social media. Some applaud his humility, while others feel suggesting a replacement oversteps the awards’ nomination process.
“Madlela has a point — a good dancer must know when to leave the stage, and he did exactly that while still at his prime. However, for him to pick someone to replace him is disrespectful to the organisers,” wrote Thabani ‘T-Maan’ Sibanda on Facebook. “There are rules and regulations for nominations. If he has withdrawn, the organisers can still select a winner from the remaining nominees rather than adding another name at his recommendation.”
The Bulawayo Arts Awards remain one of the city’s most prestigious celebrations of creativity, recognising excellence across music, film, theatre, literature, and digital media. Madlela’s withdrawal is seen by many as a move that underscores both his success and his commitment to supporting the next generation of Zimbabwean artists.
