Poetry Red Carpet Awards Expands to Include Regional Artists

The Poetry Red Carpet Awards is set to broaden its reach as the fifth edition welcomes regional artists for the first time. Scheduled for February 27 at Nicoz Diamond, the ceremony will feature South African musician NJVBULO alongside poets from Botswana and Mozambique. Running under the theme “Red Velvet,” the awards celebrate poetry as an art form and a medium of emotional expression, aligning with the month of love. The event highlights the growing recognition of literary talent in Zimbabwe and the wider region.

Founded in 2022 by television presenter and poet Cynthia Mapando, the awards were created to fill a gap in Zimbabwe’s literary landscape. Mapando noted that poets in the country had rarely received formal recognition through awards. This edition introduces 21 award categories, including Poet of the Year, Best Page Poet, Best Spoken Word Poet, Best Male and Female Poet, and a new category for Sign Language poets, reinforcing the ceremony’s commitment to inclusivity. The inclusion of artists from South Africa, Botswana, and Mozambique marks a milestone, expanding the platform for Zimbabwean talent while fostering regional collaboration.

Mapando emphasised the importance of building connections with regional and international poetry communities to grow Zimbabwean talent. She noted that feedback, both positive and negative, has helped refine the awards and contributed to the development of the local poetry industry. Since its inception, the Poetry Red Carpet Awards has elevated poetry as a voice for hope and social reflection, transforming the literary scene. Challenges remain, particularly around securing funding, which Mapando identified as a critical hurdle for sustaining visionary projects.

Despite financial obstacles, Mapando remains optimistic about the future of poetry in Zimbabwe. She stressed the need for unity within the industry, noting that collaboration is essential for long-term growth. The fifth edition of the awards positions the ceremony as a continental platform, providing Zimbabwean poets with opportunities to learn from their regional counterparts and gain wider recognition. With increased inclusivity, expanded categories, and a regional focus, the Poetry Red Carpet Awards continues to shape the country’s literary landscape and strengthen its cultural influence.
