Football on the brink of return

Football together with other high risk sports have been given a ray of hope after SRC chairman Gerald Mlotshwa said there would be resumption of sports such as football once they prove they have the financial and administrative capacity to do so. The SRC chairman said high risk sports could resume as soon as Thursday if they manage to fulfil protocols which were sent out to concerned national sport associations today.

Chairman of SRC Covid Committee Dr Allen Chiura says the bubble concept will no longer be a requirement in the protocols sent out to NSA’s for the resumption of high risk sport. Among measures also being sought for to minimise risk includes getting access to vaccines.

The SRC at the beginning of this month gave a green light for sports deemed to be low risk with athletes from sports such as tennis, golf, swimming and rowing just to name a few allowed to resume with their sporting activity which had been suspended after the announcement of strict measures following an upsurge in covid-19 cases.

Players and coaches have been left stranded for over a year following the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic. There had been hopes that football would resume after nations such as South Africa and Zambia came up with strategies for football’s resumption but up until now the sport remains on the sidelines save for international matches.
