Young Gems Ready for Semi-Final Battle Against Malawi at AUSC Region 5 Youth Games

The Zimbabwe Under-19 netball team, affectionately known as the Young Gems, are preparing for a high-stakes showdown with Malawi in the semi-finals of the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games. The match is set to take place on Thursday evening in Windhoek, Namibia.

The Young Gems have earned their spot in the semi-finals with impressive performances during the group stages. They opened their campaign with a commanding 76-23 victory over Botswana before edging hosts Namibia in a closely contested 45-41 win. These results have solidified Zimbabwe’s status as strong contenders in this year’s tournament, which began last Friday in the Namibian capital.

Head coach Stembile Banda has expressed confidence in her team’s ability to deliver when it matters most. Speaking ahead of the semi-final clash, Banda praised Malawi’s skill but emphasized that her team is ready to rise to the occasion.

“Malawi is a very good team, we will tread with caution, hoping that we execute our game properly by capitalising on every turnover and every centre pass. Through teamwork and determination, we have been working hard for this moment and today we are going to shine,” Banda said.

With a blend of disciplined defense and sharp shooting, the Young Gems have shown resilience and growth throughout the tournament. Banda remains optimistic that the team has what it takes to go all the way to the final and possibly claim the championship title.

As the semi-final match approaches, Zimbabweans at home and abroad will be rallying behind the Young Gems, hoping their hard work, talent, and fighting spirit will carry them through to a historic finish at the Region 5 Youth Games.
